When The Devil Makes Three comes to town it is a boot-stomping good time, and last week in Oakland CA was no exception. The three-piece folk rock band out of Santa Cruz headlined at the Fox Oakland Theatre Saturday, welcomed by an enthusiastic crowd.
But the attendees who only arrived for the headliner may have missed out on a talent out of Austin, Texas: Joe Pug.
Pug, a singer-songwriter, guitarist and harmonica player, is not a stranger to the Bay Area but announced at the sold-out show it was his first time playing in Oakland. With warm melodies and a voice to match, his mellow but rich sound provided a kind of quiet before the storm that is a live show from The Devil Makes Three.
According to an online biography of the artist, several years on the road almost convinced Pug to quit music in 2013. Music lovers are lucky he has not, and can look forward to hearing more from him in the future.
Pug is not slated for any California shows soon, but his full-length album Windfall comes out March 10. To learn more about Joe Pug visit him online at joepugmusic.com.
