Dim lights. Wood floors. Dozens of couples bobbing and spinning, each with their own rhythm, their own style, somehow all working in sync to create an energetic, whirling dance floor. The fifties are brought to life again amidst whirling skirts and dancers walking arm-and-arm at Midtown Stomp, a swing dancing venue in downtown Sacramento.
If you like the fifties, great exercise, or meeting new friends, head over to Midtown Stomp! If you haven’t tried swing before, don’t worry; there’s an hour-long beginner’s lesson before the real dancing starts. And when it does start, any experienced (or not so experienced) dancer there will be happy to share what they know. The crowd is friendly and personable, coming from all over and at all ages, and even if you come alone you’re almost certain to leave with a friend.
Local bands play live several times a month, leading to a unique experience every time you attend. Dancers switch partners every song, so you’ll get plenty of chances to experience someone else’s style or catch the eye of that cutie you’ve been staring at. No two dances are the same! Swing dancing is an incredible experience and a great way to shake up your usual weekend activities. Midtown Stomp, one of the biggest swing venues on the west coast, offers an amazing night of fun that could easily rival any club or bar.
Head to Midtown Stop any Friday night at 9 (or 8 for the beginner’s lesson) at Confucius Hall on I and 4th Streets. (Most girls wear a swishy skirt or dress, and most guys wear jeans and a button-up shirt). Check out their website at http://www.midtownstomp.com/
